Advertising has changed. Have you?

While the original principles and theories behind effective advertising are still relevant, in response to the ever-changing consumer landscape, traditional advertising tactics have had to adapt. Instead of working in isolation, they are now designed to form one part of a much larger communications mix. The result? A disconnect in industry where many marketing, media and advertising industry professionals have been left without a thorough and much-needed understanding of how advertising fits, and works together, with all aspects of marketing communications.
Advertising has changed. Have you?

In response to this need for agile industry professionals, the University of Cape Town and online education company, GetSmarter, have launched the online University of Cape Town Foundations of Advertising short course. Instructor for the course is Gillian Rightford, owner of AdTherapy and Integrated Marketing Communications lecturer at the University of Cape Town.

Specifically targeted at current industry professionals hoping to advance their marketing or advertising careers, as well as those seeking to enter the advertising industry, this online short course serves as an important CV-booster and skills-refresher, backed by the formal validation of a certificate approved by the University of Cape Town, which is received upon completion of the course.

Course participants will learn about the structure, processes and roles of the modern advertising industry; understand the new consumer and learn how to explore modern market segments; discover alternative and new media; conduct important advertising-based research; and learn strategic planning for advertising within the broader context of integrated marketing.

GetSmarter's "high touch" online learning model allows course participants to receive a high level of personal proactive support throughout the course. Participants access all course materials online and engage with fellow participants, a designated Course Co-ordinator and the Course Instructor through an online and interactive discussion forum.

The 10-week short course, which starts on 15 July, is presented entirely online and has been tailored to suit the lifestyles of working industry professionals, allowing students to complete the short course any time and anywhere.
