HA delegates to tour 2010 stadium

The 13th Highway Africa conference, themed 'Reporting Africa: 2010, development and democracy', will be launching four books during the four-day event and invites delegates on a tour of one of the 2010 stadia. Highway Africa takes place in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, South Africa from 5 - 8 September 2009.

Book and bytes
The following books will be launched during the conference:


  • Reinventing local news: Connecting with communities using communication technologies - Adam Clayton Powell
  • The Digital Public Space - Fackson Banda et al
  • Beyond Broadcasting: The future of state owned broadcasters in Southern Africa - Guy Berger et al
  • Eyes of Democracy: The Media and Elections - Manoah Esipisu et al

Highway Africa will focus on how Africa will tell the story of 2010, how African media has reported on development and democracy and how ICTs can be used to enhance democracy and development on the continent. The conference delegates will visit one of the 2010 stadia, the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium in Port Elizabeth, as MTN hosts the official opening reception on 6 September 2009.

There will be demonstrations and exhibitions by of some of the sponsors such as the Department of Communication, MTN, Telkom and MultiChoice.

Highway Africa is a partnership between Rhodes University (School of Journalism and Media Studies) and the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), with the support of several partners, development agencies and sponsors.
