Campaign applauds outstanding Capetonians

Ad agency BBDO Cape Town is spreading the word of the first “Best of Cape Town Awards” for client Good Hope FM through an extensive print campaign calling for nominations from the public. The competition is intended to showcase outstanding contributions and achievements of the people of the Mother City.

Capetonians have a rich and diverse culture, a keen appreciation for the good things in life and great sense of community. The melting pot that is Cape Town boasts a wealth of people and places to be celebrated. BBDO Cape Town's “real people” campaign asks Cape Town to recognise and reward its citizens who've made an outstanding contribution to their city.

The print ad was shot over a period of two days with photographer Barry White. The agency approached ordinary pedestrians in St George's Mall and photographed them applauding Cape Town. The shots were then compiled together to form the final image. Penguin included. The campaign captures the pulse of Cape Town while reflecting the synergy between the beats of Good Hope and the heart of the city.

The campaign runs over a four-week period in August 2008, in which Capetonians nominate candidates online or via printed entry forms available around Cape Town. Categories include shopping, community heroes, as well as creative, sports and music achievers. The public is invited to vote for their favourite nominated hero, online or via SMS. The winners will be announced at a gala event in September.

The money generated from the SMS voting system will kick-off funding for a tik-prevention programme, set up as a stand-alone initiative through the Amy Biehl Foundation.
