10 things to do to save our world

The website for Al Gore's film An Inconvenient Truth - which opens exclusively at Cinema Nouveau screened by Jameson cinemas nationwide this Friday, 20 October 2006 - lists a Top 10 for ordinary people to do to save our world.

  1. Recycle more
You can save 5280kg of carbon dioxide a year by recycling half of the waste your household generates.

  2. Buy recycled paper products
It takes 70-90% less energy to make recycled paper and it prevents the loss of forests worldwide.

  3. Plant a tree
A single tree will absorb one ton of carbon dioxide over its lifetime.

  4. Drive less
Walk, cycle, carpool or take public transport more often. You'll save 2.2kg of carbon dioxide for every kilometer you don't drive.

  5. Check your tires weekly to make sure they're properly inflated
Proper inflation can improve petrol mileage by more than 3%. Since every litre of petrol saved keeps 44kg of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere - every increase in fuel efficiency makes a difference!

  6. Change a light
Replacing one regular light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb will save 330kg of carbon dioxide a year.

  7. Adjust your thermostat
Moving your thermostat down just 2°C in winter and up 2°C in summer could save about 4400kg of carbon dioxide a year.

  8. Use less hot water
It takes a lot of energy to heat water. You can use less hot water by installing a low flow showerhead (770kg of carbon dioxide saved per year) and washing your clothes in cold or warm water (1100kg saved per year).

  9. Avoid products with a lot of packaging
You can save 2640kg of carbon dioxide if you cut down your rubbish by 10%. Recycle!
