Adboard (Pty) Ltd was formed in June 2002 as a result of a new concept developed by Leon de Lange, owner of Protocol Management Systems CC. The concept of Adboards was based on research done in the advertising industry and a feasibility study that was conducted in order to determine whether it had a place in the market.
The result was a lucrative business opportunity being offered to companies owning delivery vehicles with a single rear door. Examples of suitable vehicles are the Mitsubishi panel van, Toyota Condor and Toyota Stallion, all with the single large rear window. Specialised back-lit advertising boards are fitted into the rear window of these vehicles which contain six rotating screens offering prime exposure for advertisers as the vehicles do their rounds.
The vehicle owner earns 10% commission on all advertising placed on the screens of the vehicle and also receives one screen free per vehicle for the company's own advertising. If owners find advertisers of their own they are entitled to a higher commission, which is negotaiable.
An example of the commission that can be earned is if all five screens are booked for six months on ten vehicles, the owner is entitled to R21 000 in commission. The value of one free screen per vehicle on ten vehicles for six months is R42 000.
Each board also comes with a free satellite tracking device supplied by Global Telematics. The tracking system is included in the deal at no extra cost, with a value of R3000 for installation once off and R3000 over six months for an entry level contract.
Interest in the patents, trademark and intellectual property has been shown from other countries, and Adboard is working towards expanding this concept internationally.
