Bob Mabena dedicates SABC job to Primedia

Former television presenter and radio DJ Bob Mabena is the major surprise in the SABC’s latest senior strategic appointments. Mabena has been appointed by group executive CEO Dali Mpofu, as the executive manager of Public Commercial Services (PCS). Mabena described his appointment as an act of patriotism and humbly thanked Primedia.

Speaking to Bizcommunity.com shortly after the announcement, he said: “Honestly, I am thankful and 100% grateful to Primedia. I would not be in this position if Primedia did not give me that strategic job, which has opened new horizons and taken me to the level that will definitely change my life.”

He also revealed the three key strategies that he intends to use to take the corporation to greater heights.

“First of all, my vision is to create an SABC that enjoys the full support of listeners, viewers and internal staff,” he said.

“Secondly, I want to ensure that the SABC plays a meaningful role in supporting the objectives of African Renaissance and Nepad. And lastly, provide professional and accurate news and current affairs that tell the South Africa story in a balanced way, and make viewers and listeners ask themselves this question, ‘Am I more informed today than I was yesterday?’”

All this must be seen as part of empowerment and transformation, he added.

Mabena has been involved in the broadcasting industry for the past 20 years. He previously worked for Primedia and Thebe Media where he served as programme director for 94.7 Highveld Stereo and Kaya FM respectively. In these positions, he was in charge of the overall sound of the station. Some of his career highlights include being a radio and television presenter on SABC1, SABC Africa, Radio Metro and Kaya FM.

He was awarded Artes Awards for television presenting in 1994 and radio presenting in 1995.
