Over the years it has proved a powerful and influential tool in highlighting conservation issues in an objective, independent manner, winning a host of awards along the way. 50/50 has now undergone a makeover to keep it up-to-the-minute and relevant for South Africans of all ages, who are seeking a forum where they can be informed and educated about ‘green' issues while being entertained.
Johann Botha will co-anchor the show alongside Stacey Koma in a modern, revamped studio sporting the latest technological enhancements - but modelled in an energy efficient way in order to lead by example. Ntokozo Mbuli will be presenting the Eco Flash segment, focusing on environmental news and book reviews, as well as the Toktokkie ‘heroes and villains' feature, in which viewers are invited to film people they spot committing environmental no-nos or doing good deeds, and send in their clips. Quinton Coetzee will be hosting the VeldFocus segment, which looks at wildlife contributions from viewers.
They will be joined by field presenters Carien Wandrag, Pierre Breytenbach and Wendy Wilson. In addition, the programme will feature specialist presenters on alternate weeks - Professor David Block will be providing a telescopic view of the universe in his inimitable fashion, and Professor Eric Holm will be taking out his microscope to explore and explain all matters scientific.
The new 50/50 will not only focus on the environment as we know it, but also on human environments where viewers live, and matters directly affecting them. Topics that will come under the spotlight will include global warming, alternative energy, water shortages, wildlife conservation, natural heritage, the impact of development on the environment, and urban greening.
