Giving failed matriculants a second chance

SABC Education and the Department of Education have collaborated on TV programme ‘2nd Chance', which has been developed to assist approximately 100 000 candidates who failed their matric examinations in 2007 and cannot go back to school to study towards rewriting their exams as the new Grade 12 curriculum has been introduced this year.

With the Department of Education and SABC are playing their part, students need to do theirs by registering, watching SABC1 and working hard.

Penny Vinjevold, deputy director general of FET for the Department of Education elaborates, “‘The Department of Education has been extremely concerned that these learners have accessible support to help them prepare to rewrite their matric examinations. We approached SABC Education to discuss a solution that would be widely available and provide an alternative means of tuition support to enable learners to equip themselves well when they rewrite their exams in May and June 2008.”

    Taken up the challenge

SABC Education's Learning Channel has taken up the challenge.

Top-drawer teachers will give daily revision lessons covering last year's Standard Grade matric syllabus over 18 weeks in 126 broadcasts. Learners can access these hour-long ‘2nd Chance' matric rewrite programmes from 2 February 2008 to 6 June within Learning Channel, every weekday at 11am and on Saturday and Sunday mornings from 5am on SABC1.

Seven subjects in the Standard Grade will be covered: English second language, mathematics, physical science, biology, business economics, accounting and geography.

Simon Molaudzi, GM of SABC Education comments, “SABC Education is committed to supporting learners in all aspects of their education... In partnership with the Department of Education, we urge all these learners to make full use of our programme.”
