Debbie Sharwood to head CNBC Africa CT

International business news television network CNBC, which launches its African channel on 1 June 2007, has appointed Debbie Sharwood as Cape Town bureau chief. The recent announcement was made by CNBC Africa chairman Zafar Siddiqi at a joint press conference with the Premier of the Western Cape, Ebrahim Rasool.

Comments Sharwood, “The Western Cape is one of the world’s premier tourist destinations and plays an important role in both the South African economy and that of Africa as a whole. I am looking forward to raising the business profile of the region in both the local and international arena. It is so exciting to be able to put my skills and experience to use on home soil.

“It’s great to be heading back into the world of television news and I look forward to interacting with business, institutions and government players in the region,” she adds.

Six years at CNBC Europe

Sharwood brings with her a wealth of financial journalism skills plus many years’ experience in rolling television news, having spent six years at CNBC Europe in London. As a senior producer she was responsible for two morning programmes as well as the supervision of numerous live broadcasts from conferences around Europe.

The Cape Town bureau will comprise of approximately 10 staff and will be broadcast from studios in the city centre. The branch will produce regular inserts for the broadcaster’s daily programming, both live and pre-packaged, focusing on various aspects of the Western Cape economy and business sector.

CNBC Africa will start broadcasting with feeds from bureaux in Nairobi, Lagos, Abuja, Cape Town and London. Further bureaus in Africa will be established on a roll-out basis. The station will also feature live coverage of essential business, economic and markets news from CNBC Europe, the US, Middle East, Dubai, India, Pakistan and other CNBC affiliates around the world.

Accessible on DStv

The CNBC Africa signal will be accessible to all DStv subscribers, as well as free-to-air across South Africa and the rest of sub-Saharan Africa on the Sentech “Vivid” platform. CNBC Africa is owned and operated by Africa Business News under a licencing and affiliation agreement with CNBC.
