New OB technology in time for parliamentary broadcast

Kaya FM has installed virtual equipment in its outside broadcast unit, reportedly making it a first for South African radio. Bob Mabena, host of 180withBob and veteran talk-show host John Perlman will use the complete system in the OB unit when they broadcast the opening of Parliament from Cape Town this week.

The new system includes three (3) Mecer 11.6" Capacity Multi-Touch TFT Panel (Support Full HD 1080p) slates, reducing the size of the original desk and play-out computer by 80%. The slates are for the virtual mixing desk, the play out system that works as if they were in studio and the third screen is for presenters to check emails and browse the internet.

The slate uses Windows 7. The system sits on a docking station; has a keypad and a mouse, should the presenter wish to use it.

The virtual system will allow the presenter to remotely control the OB channel in the studio and to set up the virtual mixing desk suitable for various OB requirements and presenter's needs.

"Technology is moving at a fast pace and radio continues to compete with iPods and MP3s of this world. This technology not only put us as the front of the pack but also makes us trends-setters," said radio presenter, T-Bose Mokwele, who was the first presenter to use the touchscreen play out tablet two weeks ago.
