Stationery makes 40 underprivileged schools smile

The Big Stationery Drive, launched by MWeb in association with DStv and Pick 'n Pay, has raised enough funds and stationery to assist a total of 40 schools across South Africa, ensuring that learners are equipped to receive a better education in poverty-stricken areas.

"We are astonished by the feedback from the community," says Daniela Browne, the national director of Smile, the national community-based education non-profit organisation which benefited from this drive. "We even heard about a man who asked his friends to donate cash or stationery instead of gifts for his 70th birthday party - now that's dedication!"

"MWeb's decision to support Smile's activities through this charity drive was a natural fit for the brand's core belief - to help right the future of education in our country by providing learners in rural schools with the tools for a better education," says Natalie Thayer, MWeb Home general manager.

MWeb members pledged R50 000 online, matched by another R50 000 cash donation from MWeb. In addition, Pick 'n Pay shoppers donated stationery including pens, pencils, crayons, files, exam pads, used and office stationery, from selected stores across the country. Local celebrities, including Stormers rugby captain De Wet Barry and new Stormers prop Douglas Wheatley, also added their weight to the campaign.

Smile works with approximately 27 000 learners, 500 teachers and 230 community-based primary and high schools in seven provinces.
