New transport publication for South Africa

From Mobility Media (a joint venture with the publishers of Delivery, South Africa's biggest circulating magazine reaching the public sector) comes a new public-sector title...

Mobility - transport policy and practice for the 21st century - is the first of its kind, produced by a team of award-winning journalists who are passionate about transport and are up to date with the latest transport developments around South Africa.

Mobility is a quarterly for policy-makers, practitioners and transport users, with news, insight and personal experience of local and international transport policy and practice.

Says editor Gail Jennings: "We are launching Mobility in what social marketing strategist Gil Penalosa calls 'a perfect storm': a combination of climate change, public health concerns about obesity and air quality, urban gridlock, energy insecurity and the high price of fuel, low-density sprawl, persistent poverty and an inability to access needs and services. And in South Africa, we can add the 2010 World Cup.

"Individually, each transport challenge might not stimulate transformative action, but their simultaneous occurrence means that change is inevitable."

The magazine will consider local and international transport, mobility and accessibility challenges and solutions: intelligent transport systems, bus rapid transit, taxi industry transformation, the making of pedestrian and bicycle friendly cities, managing travel demand, integrated transport planning, passenger and freight rail, ways to curb congestion, reducing vehicle emissions, road safety, and more.

"The 'perfect storm' calls not for fuel-oriented solutions, as it is not a fuel-oriented problem," notes Jennings. "We need political will where the good of the many is more important than the status and personal mobility 'needs' of the few.

"In a developing country such as South Africa, access to safe, reliable, sustainable and affordable transport is the biggest life-changer the public and private sector can provide."
