Local TV drama wins international award

The Rose d'Or Festival, held annually in Lucerne Switzerland, which draws the best of the year's entertainment television programming, awarded the Rose D'Or award for best drama and mini series to Hopeville at the awards ceremony late last week.

The mini series beat 85 other television dramas from around the world to claim the prize in a festival that rewards originality, quality and creativity in entertainment programming and encourages excellence in television and new media.

In accepting the award for the production, co-producer Harriet Gavshon of Curious Pictures praised the exceptional talent of writer/director John Trengove and co-producer Mariki van der Walt, SABC Education, SABC2 as well as thanking Heartlines, for its belief that storytelling can change the world.

Hopeville was broadcast on SABC2 and tells the story of an alcoholic father played by Themba Ndaba who tries to win the love of his son (Junior Singo) by fixing the local swimming pool. The series, which was produced by Heartlines and SABC Education, explores the impact of doing good on the lives of the whole community.

The series also stars Desmond Dube, Fana Mokoena, Terry Pheto, Mary Twala, Jonathan Pienaar and Wilmien Roussouw. Hopeville was directed by John Trengove and the cinematographer was Willie Nel. The art director was Karel Flint. The series was based on a story by Roger Smith and Michele Rowe. It was line produced by Daphne Williams.
