Woolies prioritises safety during Saccawu march

As SA Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union (Saccawu) gears up for a planned protest against Woolworths in Johannesburg today, 21 August 2008, the retail giant says that while it recognises the right of the union to organise its members and embark on such action, it will ensure that the protest causes minimal disruption to customers and employees. “Woolworths priority is the safety of staff and customers. As the union embarks upon industrial action, this will be our key priority,” said Zyda Rylands, chief operating officer, support services. “I know that Saccawu will support the need for a peaceful protest.” Woolworths maintains that it will give the union appropriate recognition once they have demonstrated that they have sufficient representation.
