Love Thy Planet with Puma in sunlight ink workshop

On Saturday 23 March, workshop participants can harness the rays of the sun to print original designs on bags and t-shirts at the Puma Creative Factory 'Love Thy Planet' workshop from 12-6pm at the Grove in South Point, Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

For R150, participants will get to print images on fair-trade, African-made tees and bags from Rukinga in Kenya.

To drive its sustainability mission the sportlifestyle brand has collaborated with Lumi, makers of sunlight-activated Inkodye and its revolutionary Lumitype process. Participants will create designs based on images shot by brand ambassadors, who will use old-fashioned pinhole cameras to answer the questions: 'What do you love about your planet?' and 'What would you want to preserve?'

The ambassadors include Dylan Muhlenberg of Men's Health, PhotoGanic creator Victoria Romburg, bloggers Misha Coetzee and Sergio Ines, fashion photographer Alex Fotiadis and creative Anthony Bila. They were selected by the company to pioneer this initiative in South Africa.

Creative steps

  • Select a negative of one of the Ambassadors' photographs
  • Paint Inkodye on your t-shirt or bag
  • Place the negative over the item and let the sun do its magic
  • Take your creation to the eco-friendly washing machines to be washed and rinsed
  • Final step - hang your t-shirt or bag in the drying area

However, the fun does not stop there - 23 March is a significant day on the environmental calendar as it is World Wildlife Fund's Earth Hour day and the company is hosting an Earth Hour party at its popular Social Club in Braamfontein. Love Thy Planet participants will be stamped to access the venue, but to avoid queues the organisers suggest walking the short distance from the workshop over to De Korte Street to secure a spot. Guests will be allowed in from 5pm and the party is open to the public.
