Bordallo Pinheiro was established in 1884 by founder Raphael Bordallo. The company is known for manufacturing decorative faïence (glazed earthenware ceramics) and tableware that combines elements of creativity, naturalism and humour.
"The Bordallo Pinheiro store in SA was born out of a passion and appreciation for unique décor pieces. We fell in love with the brand and its collections when visiting family in Portugal and were immediately drawn to the vibrancy, playfulness and detailed design of the pieces. We want to share the wonderful history and heritage of this iconic Portuguese brand with South Africa," explains business owner Melissa Gomes.
The new Bree Street store boasts natural timbers and wooden undertones to allow the products to stand out on shelf.
“Adopting fauna and flora as decorative inspiration, the Bordallo Pinheiro range, with its quirkiness, variety of colours and whimsical exuberance, gives life to any table, be it formal or casual.
"Virtually all of the pieces are handcrafted and produced with little mechanisation, using traditional techniques that have been passed down through generations of ceramic artists, making a Bordallo Pinheiro piece something special to own,” says Gomes.
The pieces are available in store range from complete dinner services, platters, salad and serving bowls, tureens, jugs, cake stands, tea and coffee sets to decorative figures and giftware.
The store is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and Saturdays from 9am to 2pm. Bordallo Pinheiro can also be purchased online.
