Textile workers get new offer

Employers in the clothing and textile industry have revised their wage offer to striking workers, the union said.

“We did get feedback from them... they have revised their offer to 8%,” said SA Clothing and Textile Workers' Union (Sactwu) deputy general secretary Wayne van der Rheede.

“We are reflecting on that but the strike will continue today. We will look at the offer and consult our members.”

Sactwu is demanding a 7.9% salary increase in cities and an 11.5% wage hike in rural areas, where it says workers are earning “much less” than their counterparts in the city.

The National Employer Caucus had initially offered a 5% increase.

The union said about 90% of 33000 workers at 336 factories countrywide stayed away from work.
