Maphai, who was Corporate Affairs Director of SAB from 1999 to 2004, provided significant leadership during his original tenure, and played a pivotal role in making SAB one of the consistently most-admired companies in South Africa.

“We're very pleased to welcome Vincent back,” says SAB Managing Director, Norman Adami. “He not only understands our business well, but he also has a keen personal appreciation for the unique soul of SAB.

“Vincent is uniquely suited for his new role with us - he is one of South Africa's most well-respected leaders, with substantial accomplishments in business, academia and public policy.”

Says Maphai: “I'm delighted to be re-joining SAB, and particularly pleased with the number of opportunities and challenges I've been given as part of my new portfolio.”

Maphai is currently, and will remain, chairman of the National Responsible Gambling Programme (NRGP), which is acknowledged globally as one of the most effective programmes of its kind in the world.

In recent years he has been chairman of Castle Brewing Namibia and an extraordinary Professor of Unisa. He also serves on the board of Discovery Holdings and Taquanta, an empowerment consortium which acquired about 30% of Nedbank Treasury Asset Management, Nedcor Treasure Management Services and NiB Securities in an empowerment deal in late 2004.

Until recently he was the executive chairman of BHPBilliton Southern Africa, having joined the company after a five year period as Corporate Affairs Director at the South African Breweries (SAB).
