Investigators from the company and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found cases where some drivers have exited vehicles thinking the car was safely in 'park' but in fact was in neutral or another gear that allowed it to move while they climbed out. Affected models include 2012-2014 Dodge Chargers and 2014-2015 Jeep Cherokees.

The Italian auto giant said it knows of 41 injuries that may be related to the problem. The cars already include protections, such as warning chimes and alert messages if driver-side doors are opened while a car is still running and 'park' is not engaged. However, Fiat Chrysler said those protections "may be insufficient". FCA said it will enhance the cars' warning and gear shift systems.

The recall affects about 812,000 cars and sport utility vehicles in the US, 52,150 in Canada, 16,800 in Mexico and 248,670 in other countries. Affected models include the 2012-4 Dodge Charger and the 2014-5 Jeep Cherokee.
