According to RobecoSAM, out of more than 3,000 companies that were invited, 864 companies from 42 different countries participated in its Corporate Sustainability Assessment for 2016. For investors, the Sustainability Yearbook identifies companies that are strongly positioned to create long-term shareholder value, it says. The Yearbook, published annually, looks at companies' sustainability performance and ranks them as gold, silver or bronze.

"RobecoSAM's annual Corporate Sustainability Assessment focuses on examining financially material factors that impact a company's core business value drivers. Factors such as a company's ability to innovate, attract and retain talent, or increase resource efficiency matter from an investor's point of view because they impact a company's competitive position and long-term financial performance," says the company.

Gold Fields was awarded Silver in the Metals & Mining category, Mediclinic International and Netcare were awarded Silver and Bronze respectively in the Health Care Providers & Services category, and Woolworths Holdings took a Bronze in the Retailing category.
