Recycle or else warns Jo'burg council

Residents in Johannesburg's north-western suburbs have been warned to start recycling their rubbish or face the possibility of large fines being imposed on them as the Johannesburg council drafts new by-laws to enforce recycling.

The pilot project in the north-western suburbs has been met by a poor response from residents with only about 20% of of the 35 000 homes targeted responding to the recycling call.

The pilot project started last year and its goal was for Pikitup - the city's rubbish-collecting utility - to recycle at least 15% of the waste it collects.
