Symphonia for South Africa encourages SA to support Mandela Day initiatives

Mandela Day is almost upon us and many South Africans will, once again, donate some of their time to honour Nelson Mandela by contributing to the enhancement of our beautiful country.

Symphonia for South Africa believes we all have a role to play in making our collective future better. To this end, Symphonia for South Africa (SSA) is calling on all segments of the population - from the NGO sector to business and government - to work together to improve education, one of South Africa's most pressing problems.

Partners for Possibility

Through their Partners for Possibility (PfP) initiative, 135 partnerships of principals and business leaders have thus far been partnered and together have developed their leadership skills in order to inspire teachers, engage communities, and ultimately better educate our learners. The PfP Programme provides an opportunity for business and community leaders to get involved in a radical innovation to change our education system, while at the same time improving their own leadership skills. It aims to bring about social change within our schools, our communities and within the entire spectrum of Corporate Social Responsibility. As Mandela said, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."

Many of the schools in the PfP Programme have held Mandela Day events in the past that have been highly successful in bringing communities together and solidifying the relationships that must exist for education to improve. Many will do so this year again. The PfP programme encourages South Africans to join them in honouring Tata Madiba's legacy by realising, "We must use time wisely and forever realise that the time is always ripe to do right."

A number of participating schools will be hosting Mandela Day events throughout the month of July.

In honour of Mandela's 67 years of fighting for the rights of humanity, you can support SSA's cause through doing the following:

  • Making a donation of R670, R268, R134, R67 (whatever you can afford to give) to SSA to assist their continued expansion and contribution to the quality education of all South Africa's learners;
  • Giving 67 minutes to one of the participating schools in your area.
