4-million new iPhones sold already

Apple's new iPhone 4S has already notched up sales of almost 4-million units in just one weekend as record numbers of buyers queued to get their hands on the first units released simultaneously in the United States, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and Britain.

According to Business Day, telecommunications company AT&T reported that it had activated a record number of iPhones on its network by 4:30 PM New York time last Friday, just hours after the phone went on sale.

The iPhone 4S has apparently won positive reviews for its voice-recognition software, speedier processor and improved camera. Analysts say sales of the phone will easily outpace those of its predecessor. The phone sells for $199, $299 or $399 depending on its configuration.

Meanwhile News24 reports that grey market models of the iPhone were on sale in Hong Kong after importers had managed to buy stocks from Japan and Australia ahead of the official launch last Friday. The grey market phones were retailing for between $1 300 and $1 500 in Hong Kong.
