    Lifestyle audits determine crooked cops

    Police officers will have to undergo lifestyle audits in an attempt to cut down on rampant corruption in the South African Police Service. The lifestyle audit will be used as an indicator of possible fraud or corruption.

    Police Minister Nathi Mthetwa says this stipulation is part of the revised anti-corruption strategy being adopted throughout the SAPS. He says that police officers who were clearly living beyond their means would be asked about the source of their money and this would justify a lifestyle audit.

    Mthetwa says that members of the Directorate of Priority Crime Investigation are the only ones who, until now, have had to undergo a lifestyle audit. However, from now on all police officers would face the possibility of an investigation into their lifestyle if warranted.

    The SAPS is implementing its integrity management framework that is part of anti-corruption plans at a divisional, provincial and police station level.
