Seventeen-year-old Ree Dolly (Jennifer Lawrence) embarks on a mission to find her father after he uses their family house as a way of securing his bail and disappears without a trace. She hacks through the lies, evasions and threats offered by her relatives and begins to piece together the truth.
Director Debra Granik, who adapted the book for the screen with Anne Rosellini, said she read the book at one sitting, which is very rare for her. "I wanted to see how this girl, Ree, was going to survive. It felt like an old-fashioned type of tale, with a character I couldn't help but root for, and with an atmosphere my mind was actively trying to conjure. It also felt fresh in that I do not often get a chance to imagine life like Ree's, whose circumstances lie outside the confines of my own."
