    Winter's Bone at Cinema Nouveau

Winter's Bone, named top movie of the year by New York magazine and tipped for Oscar nominations, will be released by Ster-Kinekor Select on Friday, 14 January 2010, and shown exclusively at Cinema Nouveau.

Winter's Bone is based on the bestselling novel by Daniel Woodrell and is a tense, naturalistic thriller starring Jennifer Lawrence, John Hawkes, Kevin Breznahan, Dale Dickey, Garret Dillahunt, Sheryl Lee and Tate Taylor.

Seventeen-year-old Ree Dolly (Jennifer Lawrence) embarks on a mission to find her father after he uses their family house as a way of securing his bail and disappears without a trace. Faced with the possibility of losing her home and being turned out into the Ozark woods, Dolly challenges her outlaw kin's code of silence and risks her life to save her family. She hacks through the lies, evasions and threats offered by her relatives and begins to piece together the truth.

Read the book at one sitting

Director Debra Granik, who adapted the book for the screen with Anne Rosellini, said she read the book at one sitting, which is very rare for her. "I wanted to see how this girl, Ree, was going to survive. It felt like an old-fashioned type of tale, with a character I couldn't help but root for, and with an atmosphere my mind was actively trying to conjure. It also felt fresh in that I do not often get a chance to imagine life like Ree's, whose circumstances lie outside the confines of my own."
