Made in Hungaria is directed by Gergely Fonyo and showcases the talents of a host of fresh-faced Hungarian performers.
Miklos Fenyo's and his parents have been living in America for a number of years and decide to return to communist Hungary in the mid-1960s, at a time when many of their fellow Hungarians are planning to flee to the West.
For young Miki (played by Tamas Szabo Kimmel) it's an exciting new phase of his life and he arrives in Budapest sporting a loud Hawaiian shirt, a perfect hairstyle and with an intrinsic streak of rebellion in his blood. He is not prepared for the sudden hardship that living under the thumb of a dictatorship will entail, but he will quickly learn the realities of his new life.
His old friends do not understand him and do not know what to make of his outrageous American clothes, his obvious American accent and his prize collection of original Buddy Holly 45s.
His childhood sweetheart, Vera (Tunde Kiss), has matured and is cold and distant, while the local tough guy, Rone (Ivan Fenyo), is unimpressed by Miki and this new challenger to his crown.
But these are not his biggest problems. When the communist authorities note his choice of lewd American music and the way he dances, as well as the effect his gyrating hips have on some of the teenage girls, they are quick to oppose him. Suddenly, his dad's job is on the line and for the first time Miki must play by the rules.
When he enters a local talent contest things come to a head.
