The first Durban Electronic Festival

A new initiative, the Durban Electronic Festival, an interactive electronic music festival and conference that is focused on growing the electronic music scene in and around Durban and KZN, runs over two days from 20-21 September 2013. Held in eThekweni, the festival works to educate, create and entertain the growing Durban scene using two key elements: the DEF University and the DEF Playground.
The first Durban Electronic Festival

The DEF University is a developmental conference that features panel discussions, in-depth artist interviews, demonstrations and product exhibitions. It offers attendees a unique opportunity to interact with some of the country's leading producers and performers in an informal and non-party environment.

The campus will be held at The Origin nightclub on 20 September. The Red Bull Studio Cape Town will be running info sessions where musical luminaries from the local industry will share and impart wisdom about their career and experiences. Over the years the studio has hosted info sessions with international heavyweights, such as Public Enemy and Steve Aoki, as well as local champions such as Vinny Da Vinci and Black Coffee.

A party with a diverse line-up

The DEF Playground is a party with a diverse line-up, thumping sound and a host of alternative forms of entertainment. Set to run over two days 20 and 21 September, it will feature a wide spectrum of genres and performances by some of the country's leading electronic artists. The first Playground date will be a conference after party at The Origin Nightclub and boasts a line-up including the Das Kapital, RVWR, Leechi, Amigo and Dj Invizable. This Play event will make use of the multiple dance floors and levels in the club by having genre-based dance floors.

DEF Playground culminates in a day-to-night Block Party in and around The Origin, including nearby parks. The block party will have three outdoor performance areas, live and installation art, sports pub, beer garden, VIP area and more, which will run from 11am to 9pm. There will be an after party held at The Origin and The Winston Pub following the Block Party. The party is done in collaboration with The Origin Nightclub and The Winston Pub and will include a free flow between venues in accordance with ticketing options.
