Afrikaans poetry event seeks to loosen the cultural corset

Let's be honest - Afrikaans poetry is not exactly associated with a laid-back time. Chances are if you imagine a congregation of Afrikaans poetic types, your mind's eye will conjure images of tweed-clad academics smoking pipes and polishing their monocles, whilst discussing the relative merits of the iambic pentameter. Not exactly the makings of a barrel of monkeys.

Which is why Anna-Bet Bester and Henry Cloete set out to address this bad rap and created an event where Capetonians can pitch up in sneakers and have a beer while enjoying the fresh, exciting work of the young Afrikaans talent that walk our streets and frequent our bars.

After the success of Niks TE Diep Nie I, which took place at the Kimberley Hotel on the 30th of April and drew a way bigger crowd than expected, it was decided to host a second event at a larger venue and add a few more poets to the roll.

Niks TE Diep Nie II will take place at the German Club (Wunderbar) on Monday 23 September 2013 from 19:30 onwards and feature the talents of Nathan Trantraal, Erns Grundling, Mavis Vermaak, Annie Klopper, Andries van Pretoria en Henry Cloete. Die Skynmaagde will end off the evening with a few of their post-apocalyptic folk-grunge tunes. There are also whispers of a reading by a surprise guest with very interesting historical connections...
