Three occupants of the plane were arrested on Tuesday (9 July) night and taken to the Lyttleton police station for questioning, SA National Defence Force spokesman Siphiwe Dlamini said.

"The aircraft was piloted by an Austrian national, who indicated that he was a student pilot doing night flight training between Grand Central Airport and Lanseria Airport," Dlamini said.

The Austrian man said he become disoriented and that dizziness led him to lose his way. "The aircraft was registered in South Africa and belonged to the Grand Central flight training services," Dlamini said.
