Government to shift control of patrol vessels

According to a report on IOL, government is considering handing over responsibility for South Africa's marine patrol vessels to the Department of Transport's SA Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA).

The fleet includes the fisheries research vessels Africana, Algoa and Ellen Khuzwayo and the patrol vessels Sarah Baartman, Lilian Ngoyi, Victoria Mxenge and Ruth First.

Responsible for maritime safety and dealing with disasters, such as oil spills, at sea, the ships have been berthed at Simon's Town for the past year, says DA fisheries spokesman Pieter van Dalen.
