Participants from 22 countries are expected to attend the workshop, which will be conducted in English and French, Allafrica.com says.

Nigeria is hosting the event in line with the goals and objectives of the Memorandum of Understanding on Port State Control for the West and Central African Regions.

Mfon Usoro, IMO Secretary General and Director General at the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), said that it became apparent that Maritime-Administration Heads need to be fully involved in the mechanism developed by the global maritime watchdog. She added that the workshop was a demonstration of the renewed commitment to build and reinforce the African continent's maritime capacity, support the maritime sector, and bolster port state control in the West and Central Africa sub-regions.

According to Allafrica.com, Usoro said further that the workshop would deal with a variety of issues including port state obligations and responsibilities of maritime administrations, recent developments on port state control procedures, the automated information database of Abuja MoU's secretariat, regional information system, and sharing of experiences between administrations on port State implementation.
