Netcare to sell 50% stake in Ampath

Dr Richard Friedland, Chief Executive Officer of Netcare Limited, announced the sale of a 50% stake held by Netcare Limited in Ampath on 12 December, an organisation providing management services to Ampath Laboratories.

In terms of the sale agreement Netcare will be selling its 50% shareholding to existing pathologist shareholders for an amount of R1,026 billion. The sale is subject to approval by the Competition Commission.

According to Friedland Netcare has been providing management services to Ampath since 2001. “Netcare is delighted to have reached agreement with Ampath. They are a world-class provider of pathology services and we wish them every success into the future,” he added.

Commenting on the announcement Dr Jan van Rooyen, National Pathology Director and Chief Executive Officer of Ampath Laboratories said: “This new development heralds an exciting yet challenging new era for Ampath. We have planned for it for some time and it is therefore well in line with our goal of developing an international laboratory network that will add value for all stakeholders by delivering a comprehensive quality pathology service that is reliable, cost effective and timely.”

Ampath provides comprehensive support services to the incorporated Pathology Laboratory practices of: Drs. du Buisson, Bruinette, Kramer Inc. and Dr. Bouwer & Partners Inc. Known for its innovation, professionalism and quality of service most of its more than 150 facilities are accredited and ISO certified by the South African National Accreditation Authority. The company employs more than 3 500, mostly laboratory professionals and ninety-five registered pathologists, from all disciplines and provides a nationwide analytical and consultative service.

At present Ampath performs more than 60 000 clinical analyses daily including referrals from elsewhere in Africa and abroad. It serves a diverse group of over 15 000 clients, medical practitioners as well as insurance, governmental, managed health care, industrial organisations and other pathology practices belonging to the National Pathology Group.
