Service with a snarl Despite what one hears around the braai and in social media, we are not that good at complaining. Oh yes, we rabbit on to friends and family about bad service, but not a great many of us actually say "Enough!" and stamp our feet and make a scene 'on the premises', so to speak. But that seems to be changing, and the question Lindsay Grubb asks... When did we stop caring about customer service, client experience? could - should - become unnecessary. But we still have a long way to go, and perhaps companies big and small, should take a leaf out of the second business dealing Grubb describes; whereas the first was foul, the latter bordered on fantastic. And that's the way it should be. One key can be to get all your staff on the same side - the company's side, and Charles Nightingale suggests companies can improve employee engagement: engage with social media. Social media is an intrinsic component of how we live and work, he says. Has there been a service delivery protest in a town near you, or your own town or city? Thabani Khumalo reckons [political] consumers are no longer impressed by political rhetoric. They've heard it all before, and they are angry, but he reckons marketing intelligence can accelerate a municipality's service delivery capacity. Here's hoping he's right, because in many municipalities around the country, the demand for "service delivery" may as well be written in Mandarin for all the good it does. And finally, we all know everything American is bigger and better, so here's your chance to go ga-ga over the latest issue of Vogue. At 916 pages it's big - and heavy enough to fell a water buffalo at 100 paces - oh, and Lady Gaga is on the cover. The magazine has broken its own record with a 916-page September issue. Not a bad way to celebrate the influential Conde Nast title's 120th anniversary, now is it. Content Director: Rod BakerPS [Biz Takeouts Podcast] 33: Agency focus - Native... [Thabani Khumalo] The latest research by Municipal IQ showed that service delivery protests were on the increase across the country, with 113 I the first half of 2012 compared to 2 in 2006. This year also accounted for 22% of all protests recorded since January 2004. Read more >>

[Michael Pearson] In a way South Africa's situation at the annual Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity is scant different to that of boxer Mohammad Ali. [Lindsay Grubb] I just went through the unpleasant process of upgrading my cellphone. I did everything in my power to mitigate any stress I might have by phoning my service provider's upgrades department, prior to physically entering their world to pick up my new iPhone. [Aki Kalliatakis] The word "sustainability" has come to be used in many contexts to describe our capacity to endure in the longer term. For our world environment, it is used to define how we are able to maintain and responsibly manage our limited resources so that they remain diverse and productive over time. And, of course, you cannot talk about sustainability without accepting that it also encompasses a principle of stewardship, or our ability to take care of needs. Read more >>

[Charles Nightingale] Numerous research studies have shown that engaged employees are the basis of a company's success and drive tangible performance results. Their contribution is particularly essential during a lengthy period of economic recession: engaged employees have a genuine intellectual and emotional sense of ownership and are willing to do whatever is needed to support the organisation's success. They take pride in doing so, and thereby acquire individual job satisfaction. Read more >>

[Brian Berkman: contributing editor, travel] When the Victoria Junction Hotel was built in 1996 it was part of one of the first New York-style loft redevelopments of industrial warehousing. The interiors were quirkily geared towards the movie industry, albeit a little verging on the theme-park.
