Station fined over chicken comment

A Pretoria radio station ruffled a few feathers when a presenter relayed the story of a cook "making out" with a chicken.
Station fined over chicken comment

Last week the Broadcasting Complaints Commission fined Jacaranda FM R5,000 for an offensive comment contained in an SMS read out by former weekday afternoon presenter Ron Olivier.

The complaint highlights the taboo topic of sex with animals, with the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals saying bestiality is on the rise.

During a discussion on listeners' most embarrassing moments at work, Olivier read out a message from someone who caught "his cook in the kitchen making out with a chicken". He has since resigned.

A Nelspruit father, identified only as Mr Swart, had just collected his daughter and two friends from school, when they heard the comment on the car radio. This left him in the awkward position of having to explain to the children what "making out with a chicken" meant.

The radio station apologised for Olivier's "poor judgment" and conceded it had breached the Broadcasting Code under which bestiality is a banned subject, unless justified.
