Car components stolen from VW recovered

More than R200 000 worth of car components stolen from the Volkswagen SA plant in Uitenhage were recovered and two courier company employees arrested during a police sting operation, Wednesday, 8 February 2012.

Police spokesman Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said the bust came after the Port Elizabeth K9 unit received a tip-off about equipment being stolen from VW.

"The dog unit spotted the courier truck leaving Uitenhage and followed them from distance. It eventually came to a halt in Bethelsdorp Road, Missionvale, outside a scrapyard," she said.

"The two courier company workers then started to offload the goods, which is when the police pounced on them."

All the components, including water pumps and car batteries, were still wrapped in packaging and due to be taken to a nearby depot. "Both men were arrested on site and the stolen goods returned to VW," said Janse van Rensburg.

The men, aged 31 and 27, are due to appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court tomorrow.
