Visitors arrived with their picnic blankets, chairs and baskets, ready for an evening of carols and entertainment. The exciting event attracted friends and families, including grandmas and grandpas, moms and dads, teenagers, toddlers and babies. On arrival, the scene was set by a marimba band playing in the background, while groups of people strolled around, choosing the perfect spot for spreading out their picnic blankets.

It was a beautiful summer evening with champagne weather. The on-site vendors sold snacks, treats and drinks to cater for all tastes and preferences. George Meiring opened the event with a fantastic rendition of a household carol, which was followed by a phenomenal performance by Leanne Dlamini. The crowd hummed and sang along to familiar tunes and many of the children joined in the fun by dancing on and around the stage.

The magic moment arrived when the brilliant twinkling lights of the tree were switched on just after 7pm to a resounding gasp from the audience. It was a heartfelt moment of celebration and remembrance of many lives lived with love, and many loving memories brought to mind, as described by Jacqui Kaye, CEO of HospiceWits.

The Tree of Light will remain switched on until 22 December. If you would like to share in the experience, entrance to the Johannesburg Zoo is R75 from 9am to 7.30pm, but once in you will be able to enjoy the lights until 9pm. Remembrance globes can still be purchased online at R70 each, on tree-of-light.co.za, and funds will go towards the care and support of HospiceWits patients with life-limiting illness and their families. This is an ideal opportunity to participate and pay tribute to friends and loved ones, or simply to celebrate life, and the season will run until 31 January 2016.

HospiceWits would like to extend their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to everyone who has contributed in any way to this worthwhile project. The successful outcome of the project can be seen in the results, which speak for themselves. Individual globes sold to date total 508 units to the value of R35,560, and corporate globes sold to date total 1,122 units to the value of R392,700, making a grand total of R428,260 to date, which is most gratifying.
