CityVarsity students chosen among thousands in international competitions

Ecstatic animation students at CityVarsity College waved the South African flag high in the Dark Green Books Short Film and Video Competition 2012, when they walked away with the Author's Choice Award and came third in the main award category for their poem Passive Tense. The competition drew thousands of candidates across the globe to create artistic videos to be uploaded on to YouTube, utilising the work of distinguished UK author, poet and biographer, Luke Andreski.

Candidates were asked to produce videos depicting their interpretation of Luke Andreski's well-known poem Passive Tense. "When I first saw CityVarsity's video representation of Passive Tense, I was knocked out by the thought of these brilliant students pooling their talents to create this video," said Andreski , who raved about the calibre of work produced by CityVarsity.

Another accomplishment for the Animation students was winning the world's largest game jam event, the Global Game Jam (GGJ). The event challenged worldwide sites to produce games in just 48 hours using a specific theme. The group of first-year students competed against many international bodies including Computer Science Programming students, who are at Honours-Degree-level and walked away as undefeated champions.

Established in 1996, CityVarsity has rapidly cemented itself as the go-to media and creative arts school in South Africa by encouraging student participation in high-calibre competitions, such as these.

CityVarsity is a fully accredited Higher Education institution, offering certificates, diplomas, advanced diplomas and degrees across the Media and Creative Arts fields. Our courses are registered with the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) while the qualifications are accredited by the Council on Higher Education (CHE).

Full-time course offerings include Animation; Film and Television Production; Digital and Print Journalism; Motion Picture Make-Up; Art Directing; Professional Photography; Sound Engineering; Multimedia Design and Production; and Professional Acting for Camera.

Students are equipped with theoretical knowledge taught by recognised industry lecturers, and also gain valuable practical experience - a distinct advantage in the workplace.

The winning students of the Dark Green Books Competition won $150 for their talents, but this was just the icing on the cake as the main prize is being recognised by an international body and being allowed to showcase their talent on a popular online medium, like Youtube. CityVarsity students are quickly becoming household names abroad, with the New York Daily Times showcasing the Newtown campus for its win in the body painting and art showcase event last year. Well done, CityVarsity!
