Interviewed and compiled by: Ashmika Chottu.

A passionate CityVarsity journalism and digital media graduate Carly-Beth Haydricks is armed with a pen in her hand, ready to take on the media world by storm. The adventurous twenty-one-year-old graduated from the CityVarsity Cape Town campus in March this year and has already managed to secure full-time employment at a leading media company, Primedia Broadcasting.

CityVarsity journalism alumnus writes her way to success

Carly-Beth is currently a Copywriter for KFM, one of Primedia’s popular and premium radio stations and loves every moment of it. Tasked with writing radio scripts as a core focus, the fun-loving wordsmith credits the flair for her profession to none other than her educational institution, CityVarsity.

We caught up with the bubbly Carly-Beth as she shared her journey with us:

Who is Carly-Beth?

I am a charismatic, humble and spiritual person who is enthusiastic about living life to the fullest. I enjoy the outdoors, being adventurous and going out with my friends and family. I enjoy gyming, playing soccer, eating healthy and staying beautiful.

What did you study at CityVarsity and when did you graduate?

A Higher Advanced Certificate in Journalism and Digital Media. I graduated in March 2017.

What made you choose this course?

I am extremely passionate about presenting on the radio, television production, writing and meeting new people. I loved the fact that the course enabled me to move between and integrate the various platforms of journalism through the wide variety of subjects that included print journalism, creative writing, radio and television studies, digital media, contextual studies, media law and photography. These subjects helped me gain a number of skills suitable for the media field.

What did you like about studying at CityVarsity?

I loved the atmosphere. Both the students and lecturers were vibrant, friendly and passionate about what they studied or taught. I admired the lecturers for the role they played in going the extra mile to ensure that we developed key skills in radio, film, writing and editing. Lecturers were patient and very helpful.

What were the most useful classes in your course?

Radio, television, print and web journalism. In radio and television, I learnt how to write and edit scripts, which proved to be an extremely useful skill in my current profession. Print and web journalism taught me how to write news reports and magazine articles as well as conduct well-structured interviews.

What is most memorable about your time of study at CityVarsity?

When we got the opportunity to collaborate with other departments and host our very own radio show together as journalism students. It was an amazing, fun and memorable experience. We all connected as one team. We read out news stories, picked out our own favourite songs for the playlist and interviewed different people from different study departments.

What are your goals for the future?

I aim to complete my degree in journalism while working and progressing at Primedia. I am also in the process of opening up my own photography company with the skills I have learnt from CityVarsity.

How does it feel to have been part of such an institution?

Being a student at CityVarsity has helped me build confidence in my skills. I feel proud of my work and accomplishments.

What is your message to CityVarsity?

I would love to thank my lecturers at CityVarsity for their constant support and dedication to me as a student. Their time and attention are greatly appreciated.
