Damelin Mowbray surprises maternity hospital mums

Every year, the second Sunday in May signifies Mothers Day, a day celebrated universally and dedicated to making mums feel appreciated and special. On 10 May 2013, the staff and students at Damelin Mowbray took the event as an opportunity to reach out to mothers in need in their community, by visiting Mowbray Maternity Hospital with freshly baked muffins in hand to treat patients.

The Mowbray Maternity Hospital is nestled within the Wheatfields Nursing Home, and provides needed medical care to young mothers who are categorised as "at risk" patients. The project was spearheaded by Mowbray Academic Manager, Lizel van Biene who wished to set an example to students that giving to others far outweighs receiving.

The Mothers Day initiative was sparked by a radio show that Lizel was listening to, "I heard on the radio about this amazing outreach event in which a lady baked cakes and delivered to mothers in need. I was inspired", she said. "This story made me step back and think about what we could do to make an impact on the women of our community. I shared the story with my team and we decided to bake a special treat for the Mowbray Maternity Home. For many of the academics at Damelin Mowbray, it was their first time trying their hand at baking! But we pulled together as a team, and in doing this, have instilled pride in ourselves and our community."

The Mowbray academic team delivered two delicious baskets of muffins to the Mowbray Maternity Hospital, to sweeten the day for new mothers who have to spend their Mother's Day in hospital. The staff at Damelin Mowbray aim to inspire their students, that the act of giving is integral to community development and social upliftment. Well done Mowbray!
