Muddy hands spark a passion for teaching Grade R

“Lyceum taught me how to plan properly; working full time and studying isn't for everyone. It really takes hard work and dedication, but it's the best feeling in the world when you look on the student portal and see you passed with a distinction.”

Cherise Muller, Grade R teacher at Dirkie Uys Primary School is absolutely crazy about what she does. According to Cherise, she was walking out of an interview at the school where she currently teaches before she got the vacancy and a child walked up to her with muddy hands and hugged her. That moment shaped her future because she instantly knew that she wanted to teach kids for a living.

She then decided to get a formal qualification and enrolled towards a Diploma in Grade R with Lyceum College. She is currently working with teachers that taught her as a kid growing up and she too is nurturing and grooming the little ones to be future leaders. The field she is in requires her to understand how to manage children with different personalities.

“Studying through Lyceum has helped and taught me how to work with different learners that come from different cultures, ethnic groups, races. I want to always show diversity in my class and make use of multicultural education,” said Cherise.

According to Cherise, it is very important to be inclusive when working with young children at a tender age. The learners have unique strengths, weaknesses and abilities. Lyceum has given her the ability to know and understand that each child is special and as a Grade R teacher, she plays a very important role in their lives, which is helping to build the foundation of a child.

She adds that what she loved about the college is that the study material that she was provided with is exactly what she is using in her class to teach her learners. She is prepared for every aspect of teaching. The modules are in accordance with the Department of Education. Also she attributes her success in her teaching career to the guidance she got from her student adviser, Precious Moyo, who always gave her assistance and support.

The next move for Cherise is to further her studies in order to upskill herself in the field of teaching. She wants to study towards a B. Ed Degree so that she ends up teaching children from Grades 1 up to 3.

Like other alumni, she also wished Lyceum well as it celebrates 100 years. She said it’s an absolute pleasure being a part of a college that opened a door to her future. “Lyceum is one great college to study through. The college and its staff have been a great help with everything, the service they provide and the material given is of high quality. I am proud to say I studied through Lyceum. Congratulations on your 100th anniversary and may you celebrate many more.”
