“Some people heal quickly and others won't, but it's an emotional journey and people need support,” said Myra America, a breast cancer survivor and volunteer at the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) in an article on the website.

The team which consisted of staff and students got ready to participate in the activities that were preplanned for the event which started at 5pm until 3am, abruptly cut due to rain.

“We set up a Damelin Gazebo and participated in the event, honouring the cancer survivors and those who are suffering from this dreadful disease,” said Vivienne Aldag, academic manager at the East London campus, who was also one of the participants.

The cancer relay, which was hosted by CANSA kicked off with a candlelight commemoration, and everyone who was present lit their candles as a tribute to those who have lost their lives to cancer. The tree of light was also lit, in remembrance of loved ones and those affected by the disease.

The Damelin team had fun running around on the track and even dressed up in different costumes based on a different theme that was allocated to each hour, a sign of commitment and dedication to the course.

The cancer survivors also had their turn to run on the track. This was a demonstration of strength and the journey that they have walked in which they came out victorious.

Damelin is not only committed to providing the best education but getting their students and staff involved in social activities that empower and inspires people from different walks of life.

Damelin is registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET).
