Become a social media master

“Keeping up to date with the latest tools and apps will help you keep your clients up to date and ahead of their competitors.” So says Eli Katz, manager of the Boston Social Media Research Hub. “We established this research hub in order to find out what tools and apps work for who and as importantly, where they work", says Katz. “For example, YouTube is a great channel for dispersing information in an entertaining way, yet it won't work in the townships where data is at a premium and wifi not always accessible.” Katz goes on to explain that not only does the research hub establish ‘what' works ‘where', but they also keep up to date daily with new tools and apps that will enhance your social media reach.

So if for example you wish to establish a consultancy to small businesses in assisting them to increase their social media footprint, or perhaps if you run an agency and have different clients who occupy space in different industries, it would serve you well to attend the Boston Social Media workshops and learn the latest tools that you will have at your disposal. These tools change on a monthly basis, and the research hub’s work is continual in this arena. “in keeping up to date with the latest tools and apps, you find that many of the tools, especially those that are the most effective, become oversubscribed due to demand, and you are then forced to find out what is the net most effective, or newest app available to you”, says Katz. “In the next series of workshops we will be releasing new aps and new findings", says Katz. A popular app is HootSuite – with this app you can create small businesses in various industries, and you will use one app to monitor and moderate all the activity in all the businesses. “Some apps work better in certain industries than in others – this is what we will tell you about in the workshops", says Katz.

In social media you can create your own small business in by consulting to agencies or by running the social media on behalf of a small business. You can invoice by the hour or work on a monthly retainer. When you upskill in this sphere, you open many new opportunities to increase earning potential. Ever heard of Klear? This is an influencer-marketing platform that makes it easy to find influencers, research and measure influencer campaigns. What does this mean for you? Once you have identified who the influencers are in your industry, you can tag onto their blogs, negotiate shared advertising with them and see who their audience is. Using this app you can review the content that you are posting, and what your competitors are posting, and see what works and what doesn’t work. “We really enjoy researching the apps out there so that we can bring you our results of what is most successful”, says Katz. “Take Klout as another example. This app will also tell you who the greatest influencers are in your industry and it will indicate to you who you should be connecting with". The names of the apps are enough to pique anyone’s interest to find out what they can do for you. Woobox allows you to customise your page with various tabs that suit your business. Hashtagify allows you to load your topic and learn what the most popular hashtags are, which then allows you in turn to use the most followed hashtags in your twitter or Instagram campaign.

“What we are saying”, says Katz, “is that to be effective and successful you need to not only have a social media campaign, but to learn the apps and tools that will help you focus and target your campaign to the most appropriate audience in the right geographic locations for your business. And this can be for any business from someone running a home beauty salon to someone running the social media marketing of a large corporate.”
