Job description

A small, upscale boutique hotel, soon-to-be-launched in Stellenbosch is seeking an operations manager.

The operations manager (OM) at Hillfarm House will be a member of the hotel management team, reporting to the GM and the CEO. The incumbent will be expected to deliver excellent results in the following areas and any other additional tasks assigned by the hotel management. These are the primary and key job responsibilities of the OM.

Guest relations and welfare
The welfare of guests and guest relations will be the primary responsibilities of the operations manager (OM). The OM will be responsible for ensuring an effective and efficient guest booking and hotel reservation system with an appropriate feedback mechanism. The comfort and convenience of guests are the primary responsibilities of the OM and other hotel staff. Every guest must not only be satisfied with the services we provide but make a repeat visit. A guest must also be eager to recommend the facility to others. This means that every guest must be treated with respect, courtesy and cordiality. Every guest must feel at home while at Hillfarm. The OM must keep a proper record of all guests so as to follow-up every visit. The OM will ensure that the relations with guests extend beyond their stay at Hillfarm.

The OM must ensure that the housekeeping staff have all the utensils required to maintain the highest standards of cleanliness and hygiene expected of a five-star hotel. The entire Hillfarm House facility, both guest rooms and common facilities, must be kept sparkling clean and fresh at all times. The OM has the overall responsibility for ensuring that guests have available to them clean sheets, clean towels, and a sparkling clean facility at all times. All electronic facilities (including light bulbs) must be checked for functionality on a daily basis to ensure the comfort and convenience of guests. Fresh flowers from the garden or brought in from outside the facility must be part of the daily checks of amenities in guest rooms as well as in the common areas.

Food and beverages
The OM has overall responsibility for ensuring a high-quality cuisine. The OM will ensure that the chef has every resource to deliver quality every time. The OM ensures the chef has access to fresh ingredients and maintains consistency in the quality and variety of menu. As well as preparing delicious breakfast, the presentation must be appealing and worthy of a five-star facility. The OM must ensure a wine inventory of high-quality South African wines, especially from the Stellenbosch area. Wine tasting will be an added incentive for guests to stay at Hillfarm.

Monitoring and evaluation reporting
The OM will be expected to monitor the hospitality and tourism industry and especially in the Winelands environment and keep up to date with emerging trends and potential risks to the business. In collaboration with the GM, the OM will from time to time develop new activities and attractions to ensure guest loyalty and continuous improvement. The OM will develop regular (weekly) reports for updating and discussion with the hotel management team. It is one of the primary and most important responsibilities of the operations manager (OM) to ensure full occupancy and repeat patronage.
