Winners of the ACI Africa Safety Awards 2017

The winners of the ACI (Airports Council International) Africa Safety Awards were announced at the 27th ACI Africa World Annual General Assembly which took place in Mauritius.

The ACI Safety Awards recognise the achievements of airports of different sizes across Africa and are presented to those airports who have demonstrated their commitment to providing excellence in safety and compliance practices.

The Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport was a recipient of the ACI 2017 Safety Award for the best airport in Africa within its category.

An assessment relating to aviation safety and aerodrome infrastructure was evaluated based on ICAO standards, national regulations and ACI best practices. “It’s an honour and privilege to receive this award and we are humbled to be recognised amongst so many great airports across our African continent,” says Marius Nel, CEO of Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport.

Since officially commencing business operations on 21 October 2002 to date, KMI Airport has opened up the skies over Mbombela (Nelspruit) for over three million passengers, affording expanded opportunities to the tourism and business industries of the province.

Recognising that aviation is essential to South Africa’s economy, and to the regional economy of Mpumalanga the airport serves as an important logistical node in the region, is an anchor for tourism, and provides a livelihood for thousands of Mbombela residents and their families.

The strategic plan for KMI Airport will ensure the long-term development of the airport takes place in such a way that it continues to contribute to the economic prosperity of the region for many years to come.
