Sunfoil to sponsor Cape Town's Big Walk

Cape Town's 10 km Big Walk on 1 March 2015 is to be sponsored by, Sunfoil, the Willowton Group's brand of sunflower cooking oil and margarine. This follows the group's involvement in the event for the past three years with its Sunshine D margarine brand.

Growing attendance

Shoaib Moosa, Sale & Marketing Director of Willowton Group, said, "We have seen the event grow from strength to strength - from 7,000 entries when it started in 2000 to the 20,000 participants who took part last year to honour the legacy of Nelson Mandela.

"The Big Walk is an excellent fit with our brand, which is a favourite among communities throughout the country. It has been associated with South African sport for several years, from grassroots level where our township cricket programmes are changing lives, through provincial level with the KZN Dolphins, up to Proteas test cricket, which represents the aspirations of the nation."

This is the first time that the Big Walk, which is very much a community event, has the same title sponsor as a national sporting team. Dr Elias Parker, sponsorship manager, said it is a tribute to the participants of the Big Walk and its organisers that the group saw it fitting to rebrand it as the Sunfoil 10 km Big Walk, consistent with the brand of the national cricket tests.

Iconic event

The City of Cape Town recognises the Big Walk as an iconic event - the third biggest social sporting event in the Western Cape after the Argus Cycle Tour and the Two Oceans Marathon - and it remains the event's official strategic partner.

The Red Cross Children's Hospital remains a major beneficiary of the event.
