Egypt plans smart village in Uganda

"The smart village project in Egypt cost more than six billion Egyptian pound investments and we are in the process of starting a similar project in Uganda, which will cost billions of shillings," Hussein Fahmy, the sales manager Smart Village, said.

He added: "We are now identifying the land in Uganda and after, we shall register the project and start." He was speaking to The Observer in Cairo recently. If it succeeds, the smart village will be Uganda's first dedicated IT business center.

In the Egyptian capital of Cairo, the smart village headquarters is a business park, which hosts different facilities such as schools, tourist centres, among others. There are 125 foreign companies operating in the Smart village in Cairo, out of 160 firms. The smart village also comes with incentives such as tax breaks.

Fahmy said a smart village is tailored to the IT industry, featuring the latest network and communications infrastructure. It is also privately-owned.
