De Kock, 30, brings with her a wealth of experience, having relentlessly and comprehensively told the political story of Nelson Mandela Bay over the years "“ even in the face of adversity.

She takes over the politics desk from Nwabisa Makunga, who was appointed deputy editor of the newspapers last month.

The Herald and Weekend Post editor Brett Horner said he was thrilled to have De Kock join the newspaper's management team.

"Rochelle is deserving of this opportunity and I have no doubt she will make a big success of it. I look forward to her contribution in her new role," Horner said.

De Kock was born in the Eastern Cape town of Tsolo, and matriculated from Ugie High School, near Maclear, before coming to study in Port Elizabeth in 2005.

After obtaining her degree in media, communication and culture from NMMU, De Kock worked as an intern at The Herald in May 2008 under the then-Avusa Pearson Graduate Trainee programme.

She was permanently employed in November of the same year and has since then worked her way up to senior reporter level.

De Kock broke her service with Times Media Group for 10 months in January 2010, when she worked as a marketing and communications officer at the Port Elizabeth College.

She returned to The Herald and Weekend Post in December of that year and has since been producing agenda-setting news of the city's political landscape.

"I'm grateful for the opportunity and look forward to the new challenge, which comes at our busiest time on the political calendar," De Kock said.
