#OnTheBigScreen: Thor, new SA films, Bolshoi Ballet and Halloween thrills

This week there are two local releases: Vaya, a synthesis of big-city anxieties and aspirations, and a mother and her daughter are haunted by supernatural forces in Siembamba. The Norse Superhero must save his homeworld in Thor: Ragnarok; it's Halloween, and in the tradition of the bloody Saw franchise, bodies are turning up around the city, each having met a uniquely gruesome demise in Jigsaw; the drama-thriller The Journey is a fictional account of the extraordinary story of two implacable enemies in Northern Ireland; Marshall explores the case of a black chauffeur accused by his white employer of sexual assault and attempted murder; in the animated Jungle Bunch, a tiger is the clumsiest Kung-Fu master ever and tries to rule the jungle, and baller lovers can indulge in the Bolshoi Ballet's The Taming Of The Shrew.

Vaya

Directed by Nigerian filmmaker Akin Omotoso, who weaves together three separate stories to create a gripping yet compassionate portrait of small-town characters immersed in the intimidating, alluring, and dangerous world of big-city Johannesburg and Soweto. It is based on the lives of four young men from The Homeless Story Project and rooted in their experiences of coming to the city in search of family and opportunities. The Homeless Story Project gives a voice to the voiceless by creating opportunities for stories to be developed into films or published media.

Siembamba

Returning to her hometown, Eden Rock, and overwhelmed by the birth of her first child, Chloe van Heerden (19) tries to come to terms with motherhood. Despite the support from her mother, Ruby (35), Chloe struggles with the demand of being a new mom. The incessant crying of her baby, the growing sense of guilt and paranoia sends Chloe into a dark depression. With a heightened urge to protect her son, Chloe sees danger in every situation.  film stars Reine Swart, Deànré Reiners, Thandi Puren, and Brandon Auret and directed by world-renowned director Darrell James Roodt (Sarafin! Treurgond, Cry the Beloved Country, Winnie Mandela) from a screenplay by Tarryn-Tanille Prinsloo.

Thor: Ragnarok

When an ancient evil, lurking for eons, is released from its shackles, Thor finds himself in a serious situation. The Asgardian prince is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer just as Asgard needs him now more than ever. With his kingdom shattered, Thor’s only hope is to summon the warrior within, and fight his way back against impossible odds to save his people from Ragnarok. He finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok, the destruction of his homeworld, and the end of Asgardian civilisation at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela. But first, he must survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger—the Incredible Hulk!

The film is directed by Taika Waititi from a screenplay by Eric Pearson and Craig Kyle & Christopher L. Yost.

Jigsaw

In the tradition of the Saw franchise, bodies are turning up around the city, each having met a uniquely gruesome demise. As the investigation proceeds, evidence points to one man: John Kramer. But how can this be? The man known as Jigsaw has been dead for over a decade.  The eighth installment in the Saw franchise, picks up over a decade after the death of the Jigsaw killer during the investigation of a new succession of murders that fit his modus operandi.

The film is directed by Australian filmmakers Michael and Peter Spierig (Predestination) , written by Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger, and starring Tobin Bell, Mandela Van Peebles, Laura Vandervoort, Brittany Allen.

The Journey

A fictional account of the extraordinary story of two implacable enemies in Northern Ireland - firebrand Democratic Unionist Party leader Ian Paisley (Timothy Spall) and Sinn Fein politician Martin McGuinness (Colm Meaney), who are forced to take a short journey together in which they will take the biggest leap of faith and change the course of history.

This British-Irish drama film was directed by Nick Hamm and written by Colin Bateman

The Jungle Bunch

Maurice may look like a penguin, but he's a real tiger inside! Raised by a tigress, he's the clumsiest Kung-Fu master ever. Along with his friends, The Jungle Bunch, he intends to maintain order and justice in the jungle, as his mother did before him. But Igor, an evil koala, wants to destroy the jungle once and for all, helped by his army of silly baboons – The Jungle Bunch to the rescue.

The Jungle Bunch is a French-American-British CGI animated film.

Marshall

In 1940, long before he sat on the US Supreme Court or claimed victory in Brown v. Board of Education, Thurgood Marshall (Chadwick Boseman) is a young rabble-rousing attorney for the NAACP.

Marshall explores one of his greatest challenges in those early days: the case of black chauffeur Joseph Spell (Sterling K. Brown), accused by his white employer, Eleanor Strubing (Kate Hudson), of sexual assault and attempted murder. While most of Marshall's work is in the south, the Spell case lands him in the wealthy white enclaves of Connecticut, where racism is never far from the surface. Angry picketers and tabloid headlines scream for Spell's conviction as black servants are fired by their fearful white employers.

The film is directed by Reginald Hudlin (Boomerang, Serving Sara). The script is written by Michael Koskoff and Jacob Koskoff (Macbeth).

Taming of The Shrew

Many suitors dream of marrying the lovely and docile Bianca, including Lucentio. However, her father will not let anyone marry her before her elder sister, the ill-tempered shrew Katherina, is married.

French choreographer Jean-Christophe Maillot lands a coup with his adaptation of Shakespeare’s comedy tailored specifically to the Bolshoi dancers, and achieves a magnetic two hours of breathtaking, nonstop dance unlike any other, portraying the Bolshoi’s audacity and energy in a completely new way. This new production was staged exclusively for the Bolshoi and cannot be seen anywhere else.
