#MusicExchange: Muriel Marco

Muriel Marco, a Cape Town resident born in Beunos Aires has a new EP out called Muri.

Marco studied at the University of Cape Town where she completed her BMus degree in composition and arrangement with distinction in Ethnomusicology. During her time at the University she travelled Southern Africa extensively experiencing the traditional and neo traditional local music scene. After finishing her studies, Marco became a freelance keyboardist, bandleader, composer and arranger.

I caught up with her last week to find out more about what music means to her and more…

BizcommunityWhen are you happiest?
When I do things that I love: I love intensity, a great buzz matched with good company!

For example:  Watching a concert or going to a festival with good friends, walking around after playing at a festival, sitting on a plane ready to take off for a holiday or performance, and having breakfast with my daughter after a good run on the beach.

BizcommunityWhat does music mean to you?
Everything. I practice, compose, market music, listen, and watch concerts throughout the day and night – It is an infinite enjoyable learning process.

BizcommunityWho are your heroes?
Some of the people I admire the most are:
Nikola Tesla, Che Guevara, Krishnamurti and Freddy Mercury.

BizcommunityIt’s your round, what are you drinking?
A specialty coffee or special tea blend. Maybe a craft beer, red with an almond taste.

BizcommunityWhat would you say makes you stand out?
I have the belief that we are all unique in own our way with a passion to fulfill. I am not afraid to show this uniqueness personally or in my work. People tend to say I am different (to the rest) and so I reply that we are all unique, I just decided to be open to it.

BizcommunityNicknames?
Murielita

BizcommunityIf you weren’t a musician, what would you do?
I would be an inventor, a scientist. Otherwise a tourist.

BizcommunityCan you give us some real proper slang and say what it means?
In Spanish?
Boludear – to fool around
Canchero – clever, smart
Una Gauchada – a favour (given as a friend)

BizcommunityWhat is at the top of your bucket list?
A trip outside of earth (I start from the bottom of the list up).

BizcommunityWhat do you complain about most often?
Not enough time…

BizcommunityWhat is your fear?
Not to get to the top of my bucket list… the outside earth trip is important to me. I do not really have fears as such, but get sad due to the state of the planet and where it seems to be heading. It really affects me seeing inequality, poverty, wars and damage to the environment.

BizcommunityHappiness is?
To me, at this stage, it is the split second where one feels complete, lost and yet connected to everything.

BizcommunityWhere would you like to be right now?
In a self-sustainable world with no hunger, wars, preoccupations, jealousy, prejudice, and competition. I see a world with endless creativity and passion.
