Five reasons to stay at Majeka House in Stellenbosch

Tucked away in the suburbs of Stellenbosch is Majeka House, a hidden oasis of luxury, filled with a lush garden, beautiful and uniquely styled rooms, exquisite dining, a glamorous spa and, oh yes, countless pigs.

The decorative pigs dotted throughout the hotel grounds and rooms are a common motif and just one of the many factors that set this five-star boutique hotel apart from most.

Here are my top five reasons that make Majeka House a must-visit.

The dreamy rooms:

Each of the 23 rooms is exquisitely and uniquely decorated. From the premier rooms, ideal for couples, to the luxurious poolside rooms, that come with semi-private pool and loungers, you can’t really make a wrong choice. Interesting décor elements include beautiful wallpapers, elegant lighting, and luxurious finishes.

The rooms also include all your usual amenities, the softest fluffiest bathrobes, safe, Lavazza Guzzini espresso machine, wi-fi, and aircon. If you’re lucky, there’s one unusual amenity; Noisette the resident cat paid a visit to our rooms for a cuddle and nap. For a self-admitted crazy cat lady, this really was a highlight for me.

The lush spa:

The popular spa includes a heated indoor pool and Jacuzzi fit for a mermaid, as well as a steam room and three therapy rooms offering a range of treatments from Africology facials to detox wraps and scrubs.

The glamorous MLounge bar:

The MLounge bar, a sensory overloaded space filled with modern meets retro oddities and artefacts, is reminiscent of an old-timey cigar lounge and is the perfect stop for a pre-dinner cocktail or post-dinner nightcap. The cocktail menu boasts delicious options such as the signature fynbos mojito or the rose martini with orange bitters and rose water.

The award-winning Makaron:

Fine dining restaurant Makaron has won countless awards and rightly so. The menu is a masterpiece of small, delicate, yet complex plates. An option of four, five or six courses is offered with the choice of pairing each of these with a wine. We chose the five small plates option with wine pairing and dined on many delicious morsels.

Highlights included a delightful and comforting tumble of roasted young carrots topped with homemade ricotta, harissa, basil and hazelnuts. Followed by lamb sweetbreads with coriander, lamb bacon and salted chilli. To be honest, the idea of lamb brains makes my stomach squirm, however, my dining partner chose this and being curious I snuck a bite. So tasty we declared this course the best of the night!

For mains, the beef short rib with sticky hollandaise, kelp and shiitake dashi was declared the winner. While the dessert of sour strawberries with wood sorrel, sweet juice and vanilla was the perfect sweet ending.

The breakfast of champions:

Breakfast includes a vast array of delectable continental and cooked options. From matcha smoothies to green juices and smoked salmon and baby bran muffins, the continental option is enough to get you dithering at the breakfast table in an excitable panic of what to sample next. While the a la carte menu offers a range of cooked options such as fluffy omelettes, eggs benedict, or French toast with berries.
